#103. or, the Hammock in the Honeysuckle

My good friend Carrie, over at Hammock in the Honeysuckle, has been having herself a bit of a fun contest at her blog over the past week.

Her contest, the Great-Get-To-Know-You-Give-Away, is a crazy bit of fun, where she asks a new question each day and your answers, along with everybody else's, help us to all get to know each other a little bit better. The give away part is that each answer, as well as some random, quirky tid-bits, decided upon at her discretion, is an entry into a draw. She's giving away a hammock. This hammock!

This isn't your run of the mill Wal-Mart hammock. It's a hand-made Nicaraguan hammock! Brought back from Nicaragua, the hammock capital of the world, by Carrie on a trip there, hacking her way through the jungle with a machete, all in an effort to find a prize worthy of this grand contest! .........um, maybe some of that isn't true but I sort of got caught up picturing her as an Indiana Jones character for a second. Sorry Carrie. But it is a Nicaraguan hammock brought back from there on a recent trip. Exciting enough, don't you think?

I've decided that I'm going to answer one of her questions over here, in the tractor. The question posed was this:

What is your favorite place/ time/ mindset for blogging?

The most efficient place for me to blog is cooped up in our office in front of our big desk top computer. Some days, nice days, I find it's hard to force myself to sit in there and be creative when I have things to do outside.  Usually, if I'm there, it's early morning or late at night. But, I do blog from other places. I've blogged off my phone from the seat of a tractor but that proved to be more of a challenge than I thought. I've blogged from a picnic table while camping, from my wife's old hand me down tiny notebook, using my phone as a modem. I've blogged from the deck that way too.

I quite like blogging from there with a coffee in the morning, except it seems to always be raining here lately and my ass keeps getting wet from the damp cushions. And sometimes, I blog from the love seat, my wife and I share in front of the television.

it seems bloggers write better if they can see their toes

I have to be sitting comfortably to blog, I tried to write this post in bed last night. After about 20 minutes of trying every position conceivable, I finally just gave up. (much to the relief of my wife as I am pretty sure she was just about to exile me back to the office so she could finally get to sleep!)

Lately, I haven't really had the proper mindset for writing down my thoughts. I'm starting to get a little concerned about this rain that seems to continue everyday. I've got lots of farming things to get done and the rain isn't helping too much. I keep having fleeting thoughts of ideas that would make a good post but unless I jot them down immediately, they seemed to get lost in the wasteland of my mind. Really, I am trying to get back into the swing of things and post a bit more.

There's still a week to go in her contest. I'd like to encourage you to stop over at her site and say hi. Maybe answer a question, maybe leave one for her to answer? Even if that means the odds of having my name drawn to win become a little less. It doesn't really matter. I've already got the spot picked out I'm going to put that hammock anyways.

.........I'll let you know how comfortable it is.

  1. LOL Ken, you'll find that blogging from a hammock doesn't work all that well, but it is a great place to nap! I loved seeing your feet there beyond the laptop, as I am often found in that pose, on the loveseat next to Papa Bear. I can "multi-task" by watching tv and blogging. My new tablet makes that much easier. I can imagine trying to type words into an iPhone on a bumpy tractor could be a bit challenging! However I hear the new voice to text programs work quite well, at least for rought draft mode. I've yet to try it. You trying to blog from bed reminds me of being young and hiding under the covers with a flashlight to continue reading after "lights out" time. :-)

    1. Voice to text sounds pretty cool. I may have to look into that.

Really, the bed is the least comfortable of spots for me. I have to sit up and hunch over the keyboard. If I spend any amount of time there, my back gets all kinked up.

Reading under the covers with a flashlight was way easier!

  2. Having a wet ass is indeed quite irritating. Even more so: weather that won't cooperate especially when you're trying to grow the world's food. Feel for ya.

    1. Thanks. I know that everyone in the area is in the same boat but it's still a little stressful.

Wet ass is indeed irritating. Unless your fishing? Fishing has a way of making being uncomfortable so much less so.

  3. I love your deck! And I think I spy a cute yellow lab laying there, too :)

I hope the rain lets up so you can get your farm work done and put your mind at ease!

    1. Thanks about the deck. That surely is a yellow lab laying there. His name is Tuke.

I suspect it will turn around shortly. It's been like this for about a month now.

  4. Nice feet...and deck. I really have to be in the mood to post on my blog. Lately I have been so drained. Pulled in too many directions, I suppose.

I'll check out the contest. Oh, I could use a hammock about now!

    1. Thanks Tracey. I hope that I can shake off this funk soon. I find I'm missing all the comments from not posting as often.

Please do go check out Carries contest. I hope she gets a ton of participation!

  5. I have got to get in on that contest. I have been wanting a hammock since forever. I pester my family about it on a regular basis. Where we lived before, we didn't have room for one (no back yard) and now that we have the room, I can't afford one. Maybe I can win me one!

    1. Everybody has a chance. Or more, depending on how many questions you answer. This one looks like a doozy! Of course, I'm expecting to win myself as well but I'm still wishing everybody good luck. :)

  6. Dear Ken,
Can you please share some of the rain?
    Dryly yours, funny.

    1. Dear Funny,
More than happy to share as much of the rain as you need. Free of charge. Please send a truck and a tank or whatever means you have to transport the clouds back to your place.
      With webbed feet, ken.

  7. We could use some of that rain as well. It's so odd how some places get too much rain and others get none. Sorry it's keeping you from your chores.
    Love your porch!
    And nice toes!

    1. Hey, Robin. We are getting nice days. There's just not enough of them between the showers and thunder storms to dry it up enough to do anything.

Your red toes are much nicer! :)

  8. It's funny that you can write with the laptop on your lap. I can't do that for some reason, it's like it's too uncomfortable or the battery packs too hot or something. Also, nice toes.

    1. Dear Queen Holly -
I had to jump in - it's why I often blog from a nest of pillows. My laptop rests on a pillow on my lap, making it a better height and I don't get 3rd degree burns from the battery heat. :)

    2. Thanks Holly.

Really, I only type with 2 fingers so mt notebook doesn't need to be perfectly situated. It does get a little warm at times though. The good thing about that is, when I finally go to bed, my wife can't complain about me being too cold.:)

  9. Be thankful for all that rain my friend, for it hasn't rained here for nearly 2 months. Crops are a lost cause and they are already jacking up prices for everything that has to do anything with corn or beans. Fuel, feed, wide variety of foods, etc. all expensive as hell! Major drought for Indiana, very rare and unheard of. A sign that end times are coming! lol but seriously though....think about it!

Summer is a hard time for many of us to sit indoors and try to be creative. Not when there are decks to piss off of and sunshine to take in!

    1. Wow...that's heartbreaking hearing about all the result of no rain. What's weird is that we normally don't get much and we've had a fair amount this summer. Not that we're cresting the banks of our rivers or anything, but we have been getting daily little showers. I will pray some head your way.

    2. I know what that's like Dan. A few years back we went through quite a spell of dry weather. Everything was drying up and the lake levels were starting to drop significantly. It's only been the last couple that things are beginning to swing back the other way.

I am certainly trying to take advantage of the sun when it shines! Winters just around the corner.

  10. My friend Ken!
I am JUST getting to this - you know that little thing about things getting hectic and life getting in the way of blogging sometimes? Yep. That'd be my last couple of days. I am desperately trying to catch up with everything now.

You rock. Thanks for encouraging folks to come on over and give the contest a whirl! This post is so cool - I have loved getting to hear and see where 'mission control' is for some of my favorite blog friends. I have posted my own bloggy feet picture too!

This reply will be short, although I find when I answer yours on mine, I feel like I could 'talk' on and on forever. ha ha! Going to head back to the hammock to answer everyone's awesome questions now! But I am going to link this over there. Yeah - I like ya that much. :)

    1. You're welcome Carrie. I'm very glad to do it.

I know how easy it is to get behind on commenting. I'm pretty sure if you can't fit all your answers in by the end of the week, nobody would mind hearing your answers into next week. Do as much as you can. Don't stretch yourself too thin. :)

  11. I like blogging at work, that way I can at least get paid for doing something I love. Especially these days when it is a bit quieter than normal. I'm not moving around n a tractor though

Most of the time I always end up reading my ever expanding reading list. Its easier ;)

  12. Wow. Your deck is fabulous.

I can only blog from my desk in our home office. That's it. I've tried other places, but it seems to be my thinking spot.

The majority of mine happen there as well. Sometimes though I try to mix it up a bit.
I do more replying and commenting from the couch or bed.
