#94. or, not another awards post.

So, something wonderful has happened to me through this blog, It's pretty cool and exciting. Except I'm not entirely sure that I'm supposed to be talking about it just yet.......so forget I even said anything about that.

A couple weeks back, I received a Kreative Blogger award from Carrie at hammock in the Honeysuckle. You can read about that here. One of the seven awesome bloggers that I passed this award on to was Reanna at Rock the Single Life. As per the rules, which appear to be quite flexible, I answered the seven questions and listed the 10 random facts about myself. (because there is ONLY, 10 random facts about me.)

Now, because Reanna, my Hip Hop Homie, is so bad-ass awesome, she has done something completely unprecedented, and listed me back as someone she believes that is deserving of this award. This is fortunate on a couple levels. The first, awards are just awesome and to be thought of as deserving of these is so surprising to me. So thank you Reanna, I am pleased to roll with your crew.

Thank You, Reanna!

The second fortunate thing about receiving this award is that I'm going to use it to solve a problem that I've been having. I'm not sure that any of you have noticed this but, i am rapidly approaching two separate milestones on this little blog of mine. The first one is my 100th post. This isn't such a big one. I mean, it's a lot of posts but really, if half of them are worthy of a second look, I'd be surprised. The one that means more to me is that, I'm closing in on 10 000 views rather quickly. So much of that is due to the wonderful family that I've made here, that support me and help to spread the word about me and my tractor. I can remember writing a post about how shocked i was because i was at 700 views. That doesn't seem all that long ago and to all of you, who stop by here on a regular basis, or even once in a while, I am deeply grateful.

It seems, the thing to do for you're 100th post is to compile a list of 100 random facts about yourself to let people get to know you better. I had trouble coming up with the first 10 for the Kreativ Blogger award, I'm certainly not interesting enough to have 100 random facts about me, so I decided i'm not going to do that. What I am going to do, for my 10 000th view, and to completely ignore and basterdize the rules of the Kreativ Blogger Award, is to have you, my readers and followers, ask me the questions.

From this post until i hit 10 000 views, ask me anything you want to know. I will do my best to leave you an answer. If it's too personal, I may have to do it by e-mail or something. (I'm not anonymous here.) But I will do my best to give you an answer. Maybe through answering the questions, you will be able to discover a few random things about me.

  AND NOW FOR THE SURPRISE!

To reward you for the honor of having you visit here, time after time, from this post until 10 000 views, if you leave a comment, ask a question, or just say hi, I will put your name into a draw for a * rare, limited edition, collectors item, one of a kind, replica tractor.* (I'm going to include my facebook comments on the links I post as well because I know some of you like to comment from there.)

not a tractor i own but as close as i could get

  * This tractor isn't actually rare, limited edition, a collectors item, or one of a kind. I just threw that in there for dramatic effect. I just picked it up off the shelf at the local John Deere store.

If, on the day I reach 10 000 views, and your name is drawn from the hat, I'll leave a comment and ask for an address and I will mail you this tractor.

About that thing that I'm not sure that I can talk about yet, it involves writing a couple posts that you won't be able to see here. I hope that won't effect what's happening here and I do realize, I've been a little scarce lately. I will do my best to keep in touch. I'm kind of hoping some of the questions will trigger a few thoughts in my head which currently seems to be full of work related things (Damn, I hate it when that happens.)  So please, send them along. And thank you for stopping by.

  1. Awesome. Congrats on your award and the new opportunities coming your way.

I've been a bit absent lately, but am still here. I have not lost a single pound since we started our challenge, but I feel much better working out every day. Hopefully, the weight will start to come off soon.

    No questions.

I am glad that you are able to work out and are feeling better because of it. I am confident that the pounds will start to reflect your effort very soon.
      Thank you, Brett.

  3. Hi Ken. I am a In A Tractor Fan. And I look forward to your posts. My question is: How is the rebuild going after your barn fire? I see you bought some replacemnt equipment but just wondering if you have a new building started yet?

    1. Actually, the building is the thing we have not done anything about as of yet. I hope to get on that in the next couple weeks. I have arranged for a wrecker to come in and take all the burned pieces as salvage. Then i think i may need to clean up the concrete and i can look at offers on replacing the building. It takes a lot of time.
Thank for the question Sheri. :)

  4. Congratulations! I LOVE the little tractor you're giving away lol... that's such a cute idea :) I want to give something away too - but haven't quite found the way to do it yet. Something will come up I'm sure :) Questions eh? Hmmm...

    1) What do your kids call you?
    2) What's the hardest thing about farming?
    3) What's the most rewarding thing about farming?
    4) Does your wife have a special name of endearment for you?
    5) Do you have any special names of endearment for her?

Lol, I'll start with these five and we can go from there ;-)

    1. 5 questions? You've picked up a thing or two from Josie?
      It's ok, i'll do my best. :)
#1. My kids call me dad. At least when i'm around. When i'm not, i suspect it might be less flattering.
#2. The hardest thing is the marketing. I spend a good deal of time on the computer watching prices and trying to decide when is the best time to sell. It's something that has become more of a chore than anything else.
#3. The most rewarding thing is when that last cheque for what you have done over the year, goes into the bank. But its not so much that the money is there as it is knowing that you did the job, provided for your family and there's something left to do it all again the next year.
#4. My wife calls me babe. At least when I'm around, When I'm not, i suspect it might be less flattering.
#5. The only one i can think of is baby. Like when she gets home from work, i usually say "hey baby, how was your day?" I guess some women dislike that term but it's not meant in a creepy sort of way.

I hope those answer your questions. If not or if you have any others, feel free to send them along. :)

    2. Lol, I somehow got the idea that we were aiming for 100 - so thanks for answering all of mine! I think both babe and baby are cute - definitely not creepy :)

  5. Congrats on another award, good thing you aren't notching a post on the porch over these, or it would be falling apart about now! Seriously, you have a great blog and folks enjoy reading it, the awards are well deserved. I love your idea of turning it around and letting us ask you questions. You KNOW how I love to ask questions. I'm going to put my thinking cap on and come up with a few good ones. Here's one to start with... Is it true that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's? :-) Oh, and as the daughter of a John Deere dealer,, we grew up with assorted green farm toys and I loved them. In fact I still have a couple old ones packed away. Your prize made me smile... how perfect from Ken Inatractor!

    1. You know, i have heard that about a dog as well and i can honestly say that i have no idea. However, i have noticed that my dog does spend a considerable amount of time licking his balls. So much so, that i would have to say his balls are probably cleaner than his mouth is. But that's just an observation.

It still amazes me that people think i am worthy of these things. But i do appreciate it so much.
Thanks Josie. If you have more questions, i will do my best to answer them. :)

    2. I'm glad you're using the award to celebrate your blog. Makes me feel like a part of your celebration.

And some questions, just for starters:

      - In one of your comments on my blog, you said you "always wanted to be a hip hop vigilante and roll with a crew." What sort of vigilante justice do you see yourself carrying out? Also, do you actually listen to rap music?
      - Do you name the animals that will end up at the slaughterhouse? That's not meant morbidly - we named our roosters and laying hens, and even labelled them in the freezer because the meat would be tougher.
      - You know I'm a fan of swearing. Do you have any favourite and/or creative bits of language you like to use? When/where do you use them?
      - And seriously... why did Gene Roddenberry think a onesie would be the fashion of the future? Did he really not get the physics involved in needing to take a crap while wearing a one-piece uniform?

      Delete
    3. You are a part of this celebration! Also, these are some bitchin questions! :)

He didn't really roll with a crew, but i have always been a fan of the Batman type of vigilante justice. Not the fun loving happy Batman though, the brooding, ass-kicking, thumping on bad guys in the dark Batman. The superhero without any super powers hero that still has the balls to give superman a run for his money. (if you've ever read Frank Millers, The Dark Night Returns?) THAT Batman. Plus i'd like to think when he's doing 200 MPH in the Batmobile, sometimes he flips on a little Hip Hop? God, i hope that doesn't make me sound too nerdy!
I don't listen to rap exclusively but a quick roll through my itunes playlist has some eminem, Fort Minor, and Snoop Dog. There's also some Pitbull, Flo Rida, and Knann. Some of that is pretty mainstream and i'm not sure if it actually counts. I did finally get to listen to your tracks though and i added a couple to my YouTube favorites.

We really only have cattle and of those, only the tame ones that come to be scratched tend to get names. Those are usually always cows that get sold when they get old and end up at McDonalds rather than my freezer. We try to pick the good stuff for ourselves.

I do my share of swearing. As a rule, there's usually quite a colorful string of words following that wrench i hurl across the yard. It's not something i pepper my everyday conversation with but i'm comfortable around people who use it more often. I can't say why it didn't follow me here. I guess i just wasn't sure what to expect when i started this or who would be reading, not that it should matter? But yes, i do swear.

When i was a little kid, like in grade 1 or 2, on a really cold winter day, my mother sent me to school in one piece underwear. (other clothes too! The underwear underneath.) Now, a 6 or 7 year old kid has no business trying to manage the buttons on the butt-flap of one piece underwear. Time and experience has granted me the gift of being able to manage buttons without looking at them but at that age, it was rather traumatic. I am quite convinced, that had he been forced to live the horror of the butt-flap buttons at an early age, Gene Roddenberry most certainly would have dressed the future in stretchy, draw string pants as a uniform. But that's just my thought on the issue?

Hope those answers are sufficient? If you have more questions, feel free to send them along. :)

    4. So cool. I love THAT Batman too. And yeah, there's no freaking pop or country in the Batmobile. That's a hip-hop ride all the way.

ALL music counts - people may not all be moved by the same thing, and who cares? It only matters that we're moved. I'm not a mainstream hater at all (I own every Eminem album - love the guy). I just happen to be drawn to lesser-known artists, and that may be because rap still has such an underground element to it.

Awesome answer to the Roddenberry question! We had those long underwear bodysuit/feces collectors when I was a kid too - is that some weird Albertan child abuse issue?

    1. I had to think about this for a while.

I've found, the most relaxing time away from what i do lately, has been to get on a plane and go someplace tropical. The moment those wheels leave the runway, there's nothing i can do about what's happening at home and all those worries stay behind.

So, if you ask me today, i'd probably say somewhere on the East side of Mexico, in an all inclusive resort, so food and drink are at an endless supply. There would have to be miles of white sand beach to stroll along and a nice little cigar shop within walking distance. And if i was there alone, probably a couple books to read. But i think i'd like them to be hard cover. There's something about reading a hard cover book that makes me feel nice inside. However, this is the beach and paperbacks and the beach sort of go together so i might be flexible on that. :)

  11. Congrats on your award! And whatever your top-secret good news, Ken, you deserve it and I’m happy for you! Your posts are always enjoyable to read--and it would appear that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the powers that be. :D

As for questions, although I already asked this on Twitter I’m going to ask it again because I believe the entire blogosphere would like to know the answer. Why don’t you legally change your last name (which is nice but not at all tractor-y), to “Inatractor”? How cool would that be? Very! I’m sure Mrs. Inatractor and your three little Inatractors would love the fame and fortune such a change would bring. :D

    1. As awesome as that sounds, If the Inatractors were ever, on the off chance, able to become famous, i think it would be nice to be able to go out shopping at Wal-Mart and not get mobbed by the hoards of adoring fans. I think a secret identity would be helpful in that situation and prevent me from having to wear a mask and dress my wife and kids in masks whenever we went out? That's the only reason it isn't Inatractor already.

I hope that answers your question and thanks so much for you kind words Mrs. Earthling......or can i call you Super? ;)

  12. I am curious as to what kinda of animals you have besides cattle. Do you have dogs and cats? Any chickens? Also, I just wanted to say that having another person with a farm to talk to and whatnot is just awesome. Most poeple just don't quite get things like raising baby chicks and why frost in may is bad. :)

    1. For the most part, it's just cattle as livestock. When i was a kid we had chickens and pigs as well but we slowly drifted away from that. About 10 years ago, when my dad was still alive, we actually ran a small feedlot here and ran about 2500 head. There wasn't much time for chickens and pigs when that was going on. Right now we calve about 180 cows so the numbers are a lot less but there's still a fair amount of work involved.

We do have 3 dogs. 2 labs. A yellow and a black. They are wonderful dogs and i can't say enough about labs as family dogs. At least these anyways. The 3rd dog is a corgie/mut cross. She is our English as a second language dog that is most likely going to get a post about her sometime in the future.

I like that we share the farming background in common. But to be honest, the way that you do some of the things leaves me saying to myself, GOOD LORD WOMAN, ARE YOU INSANE!! That being said, i also admire you for keeping alive a way of life that has long since disappeared to so many people. Good for you Holly, and i'm glad to have you around. :)

Here are my questions. What is the best experience you've had in the states?

What is your favorite memory as a newlywed?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm a little ashamed to say, i haven't spent a lot of time in the United States. One time, we did a driving trip to Las Vegas with my mother and Father-in-law. I saw some pretty cool stuff that trip. I think my best experience though might be a trip we took with our kids, along the Road to The Sun in Glacier National Park. We left from the Canada side and the drive was just beautiful. It ended in a small town in Montana. I can't remember the name though. We all sat at a picnic bench and had Huckleberry ice cream cones. The sun was shining and the town had a sort of olden feel to it. It wasn't fancy, we were only there for a few hours one afternoon, but i will always remember eating those ice cream cones together as a family in the United States. That's not such a grand event memory, is it?

My favorite memory as a newlywed would have to be the trip we took with a camper on our honeymoon to Vancouver. It was really the first big thing we did as a couple, alone together. We had a flat tire, played mini golf in the rain, in Flintstone park, (everyone thought we were nuts) I forgot my wedding ring on top of the paper towel holder at a campground shower and had to go back to get it. Just had a really good time being together and the things that might ruin you're day, didn't matter all that much. If i remember correctly, i got a little pouty when my wife got a fire going in the rain when i couldn't. Back then, those things mattered to me a lot more. :)

      Delete
    2. Both those stories are really sweet, and yes the ice cream is actually really sweet.

I think your newlywed story would make a good post. Ah to be in love. Especially since you just had your anniversary. Getting pouty when she gets the fire going is hilarious!!

    1. I am going to give this some proper thought, i'll come back to it in a bit.

    2. Alright, i met my wife in the bar. I know, that's not very romantic of a story to tell the kids.
To tell you the truth, she was the one that did the pursuing. My wife and another were friends with a female neighbor of mine. Both of them seemed to be interested in me. (it's a small town, pickings are slim!) Anyways, my neighbor friend took me aside and strongly suggested that i choose my wife. I picked the other girl. That was a bit of a disaster. I was painfully shy at the time and although my guy friends and i talked a good game with each other, we were all pretty awkward with the opposite sex. Fortunately, the right gal was still waiting and interested in me when the first girl kicked me to the curb. It wasn't easy though. We were friends for quite some time. I wanted it to be more but i was quite nervous. One weekend, a group of us went camping. We spent quite a bit of time together that trip and before the weekend ended, i walked on the beach with her and held her hand for the first time.
When did i know i wanted to marry her? She came over one time and we went out and picked rocks together. I thought this was a pretty special lady.
Again, the proposal was anything but romantic. We had decided to live together and went to look at mobile homes. We picked one out and were pretty excited about it. Afterwards, we were shopping in the mall and ended up in a jewelry store looking at rings. We picked out a set of rings and decided to get married. All very practical. All the romantic mushy stuff happened later.

      Delete
    3. I love the practicality of this, in some ways John's and my relationship was similar, though we met over the Internet. We purchased a mobile home just over a month after we met, and I moved to Texas to join him a few months thereafter. Best move I ever made! And you are right, love and romance grow day by day and year by year!

    1. Wouldn't you know it, i got to 9999 and was stumped for one more so i had to abandon that plan.

I had a question similar to this earlier. I am pretty certain that if i were given the choice, i would rather spend my time travelling to visit a lot of different places than settle in just one. I haven't traveled a lot in my life, but i've been to a few spots. There's just so much adventure that comes with each new destination. Maybe someday, someplace will be the one that says to me, this is where you have to live. Until that happens, i'm going to have fun looking for it.

    1. Thanks Becky!
I have pretty much lived my whole life on the yard that i live on right now. We have always farmed in some capacity or another. I guess that i just grew up into it. My dad did other things like construction and trucking. Both of which i had a part in working at. He passed away some time back and the farming just seemed to fit well for me.

They're not house dogs, but yes, dogs it is. 2 labs and one mixed breed. There's a cat that wanders about the yard as well but the cats tend to come and go here. I don't get overly attached to cats. I'm dog people. :)

      Thanks for the questions.
