#95. or, what the hell have i been doing?

Alright, here's a quick little post just to let you guys know that i'm still alive. I actually have a few post ideas brewing in my head that i want to write about but time has not been smiling on me the last week or so.

I was finally able to get my seeding done. Finished it on June 12th. A couple days past the deadline that i had set for myself. I had to push pretty hard to get done between rain showers. One night i seeded until around 4:30 in the morning, trying to get a field finished. It's a good thing that the Lady in Red was awake on the other side of the world, chatting with me on Twitter. She helped me to stay awake. Staying up all night doesn't seem to come as easily to me as it did about 3 or 4 years ago. This is what the sky looked like on my way home to bed that morning.

the sun was just starting to come up

June 11th was also my 18th wedding anniversary. My wife and i took advantage of a rainy day and went into the city on the 10th. As usual, we had a list of things that needed to be picked up or taken care of while were there but we went to a movie and out for supper. It was a nice evening.

A week or so ago, when it was too wet to be seeding, i had started on the new stone flower bed, so i had a  place to plant the trees that we had bought in town. I got started on it just after we bought the trees, and actually, i was quite excited about the project.

before......well, just after i had gotten started
I had to wheelbarrow the stones that i needed around from the front of the house to the back where the new and improved stone wall was going to be. Once i finished seeding, i was able to spend a couple days on the project, getting it finished up. I wanted it done before Fathers Days because we were having most of my wife's family over for the afternoon. Also, my trees were starting to turn yellow and i really wanted to get them in the ground. This is it done, for now anyways. It didn't occur to me until i was pretty much done that i had spent the better part of three days putting this together to save $40 worth of trees. Somehow, that doesn't quite add up.

I finally got a start on moving my cows to pasture. I would really like to get it done this week because i need to turn the bulls in with them to breed. Otherwise, it will get so late into the season before i start calving next spring. Plus, two different grain companies have called, asking to have us deliver our grain to them this week, and we are in the middle of trying to spray our crops for weeds. We also have plans to go camping with friends this weekend (which i am really looking forward to) and because i'm lazy that way, i've just started looking at getting our trailer ready to go. Things are a bit busy around here.

The following weekend is graduation, my wife and i volunteered to help on the decorating. That means we will have to put a few days at the arena, preparing it for graduation. It appears as though i'll be running, right through until the end of the month.

.................after a long day of sorting cows and calves, it would be nice to sit down in the evening and have a beer, except i'm still trying to fit into that damn suit, so at least until then, it's water in the evening for me. Somehow, it's not quite the same.

..............OH! I am less than 400 views from 10 000. I am still open to answering questions for a chance to win my little tractor. If you have anything cross your mind, feel free to send them on.

  1. Thanks for the mention and it was fun chatting the night away with you! Love the the stone work you did around the trees :)

Sounds like you have quite the month ahead of you - although, it sounds like a lot of fun too. I'm sure they'll be some stories to share from that camping trip ;-) ... and also from trying to get into those pants!

Let me think of a new question...

When your wife was pregnant - did you ever hear the babies' heartbeats? I mean, did the doctor ever let you listen when your boys were still inside her womb? I know this is extremely random lol... but I've heard a baby's heartbeat in this way and it was incredible!

    1. I think, when we went in so my wife could get an ultra-sound while she was pregnant, that i got to listen to the heartbeat then. I remember that wooshing sound of a heart beating like crazy. The thing i always liked was watching the babies foot pushing outward and making it's way across my wife's belly. Sometimes you could put the palm of your hand on it and push back against it. That was always cool.

    2. Neat - I'll have to share my experience in a post some time :)

  2. Welcome back. Love the sky pic. And you are doing a fine job on the stonework. Quite the handy man too, it seems!

My Question: if you weren't farming, what would you want to be doing? (Hope that hasn't been asked/said already.)

    1. Thank you. I'm not too much of a carpenter but i get by.

If i could do something and it didn't matter if that thing would provide for my family, i think i would like to own a little cigar shop. I am certainly not a cigar aficionado, but i do so like going into a cigar shop or a walk in humidor and the smell of cigars. That might seem a little odd, but today, i think i might like to do that if i could.

  3. Oh your stone wall is wonderful. Oh how I love the look of stone. But I know what you mean about time. I have been running around like a mad women trying to get things done. Lately it seems I've been working right up until I am falling into bed. Good thing these summer days are so long...

    1. Thank you. I don't think that it turned out too badly.
My days have been the same. At least on the days that it isn't raining.
I left a comment on your post but it seems it was your turn to have your blog eat my comment. I'll try to leave another in a bit.

  4. You sir, are one busy man! My lazy ass wouldn't survive one day in your world! Glad you got the seeding done! One less thing you have to worry about!

And I must say, you have one nice looking home, from what I can see anyways. Nice job on the wall and I like your deck!

My question... How did your smoked oysters turn out the other day?

    1. Thank you, Dan. The deck is sort of a work in progress but i wish that i could get caught up a bit more to have time to enjoy it.

The oysters. All i did was spray a grill pan with Pam, put them directly onto it from the container and put them into the grill with a smoke pouch. The trouble i had was my grill pan was too large and i had to take the divider out to make it fit. This meant they weren't really on indirect heat and cooked quicker than i would have liked. They were still quite tasty though.

  5. Now I feel even more lazy! I stopped posting for a bit because I was feeling blech and lazy. Probably more lazy than anything. And you've been busting your butt with all that stuff. Way to be an overachiever!

Anyway, glad to see you are still going strong! And that flower bed looks awesome beyond belief!

    1. Overachiever? Nah, i have a terribly lazy side lurking about in me.

Thanks about the flower bed. I'm not really going strong, it's more going tired. falling asleep just trying to respond to comments. :)

  6. Happy Anniversary!!!

That picture of the sky is breathtaking. I can just imagine the tranquility that was present at the moment you took it, aside from the hum of your tractor.

Speaking of tractors, have you given away that little tractor yet?

Your summer sounds like mine has been - nonstop. I THINK (fingers crossed) that as of tomorrow, it is supposed to slow down a bit, and I am going to try to make it back to the hammock more. Let's hope.

Your rock border for your flowerbed ROCKS!!

    So here is my question:

-What activity(ies) make you lose all track of time?

Can I ask two? I'm going to...

-If you could live anywhere else, where would it be and why?

Mind if I borrow this 'ask me anything' idea sometime? I love the idea of pulling in some interaction with the commenting!!

I look forward to a post about your camping trip! I adore camping. Do you tent camp, rough it out in the open or use a camper of sorts? (that doesn't count as a question...unless you want it to...)

    1. Thank you about the anniversary.

There is a calmness that hangs all about at that time of day. If it wasn't so damned early, it would be worth it to get up to experience more often.

I am about 200 views away from giving away little green tractor. Still time to ask more questions.

UUG! Now that i actually have some ideas that i want to share now, I'm having trouble finding the time to write about them. Summer is so busy.

Also, thanks about the flower bed. I'd like to start on the walk way but alas, it's that time thing again.

What activities make me lose track of time? I'm sitting here staring at the screen trying to think of something but for the life of me cannot. I suspect that that is just a product of the busyness of the time of year. I KNOW there are things, they are escaping me right now. I've always said though that when i have an opportunity to fly someplace on vacation, as soon as the wheels lift off the ground, i stop worrying about time. Whatever is happening that requires my attention at home, has to wait for my return.
I think spending time with friends makes that happen. Reading as well but i can't seem to find the time to do that in the summer as much as i would like. OH! I just thought of a biggie! Walking barefoot on the beach, it's one of my favorite things. I seem to live in the moment when i'm doing that. I think there's more. I may return to this if something new comes to my mind.

If i could live anywhere else? I haven't visited a lot of places. Even though i sometimes like to go the city, I'm quite certain that i wouldn't want to live in one. I think it would have to be someplace tropical and i could wear flip flops all day. And on the beach as well. Thing is, i've only visited places like that in the optimum seasons. If i had to be there during hurricanes, I would probably change my mind. If i had unlimited funds, maybe i wouldn't live in one place? Maybe i'd just travel around experiencing new cultures and ways of life. I think that might be fun.

YES! Please use this idea. I'll be honest with you, in between the time i hit publish and that first question came in, i was rather worried that this might flop. It's been quite a bit of fun though. I was running out of things to write about. (in addition to the time thing.) Thinking about some of the answers has sparked new ideas. Really, it's worked out well. So yes, yes yes! Use this idea if you would like to. :)

I'm going to try to do a camping post before Saturday night so i can submit it into the Dude Write thing that closes on Saturday. That might be a little ambitious though. But there will be a post. There should be a post. I hope i can squeeze a post in. :)

    2. I will just have you know, Kimosabe, that with all your talk about being so close to 10,000 views you are nearing quite a feat considering I have had my little hammock up for almost three years and I happened to look today out of curiosity and I have about 700 something to go before I hit 10,000 views so WAY TO GO, JOE!!! :) Pretty cool and reason to be proud!

We share some similar activities where we lose track of time - flying and walking on the beach. I could walk around the world if there were a continual stretch of white sand around the globe and not think twice about the distance. I also lose track of time when I'm writing, painting and when I travel. Would love it if you returned to that idea as a post to hear more about a time you wandered some sandy beach.

I like the idea of not living in just one place. I think that would be my choice for sure. :)

Great - I will craft a short post soon introducing the idea of a questioning series, and hope that there will be some participation. I can see how you feared whether it would go well. I feel the same.

Looking forward to the camping post!

  7. Okay, wait...I have another question -

What are your thoughts on a woman smoking a cigar?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh don't get me started on cigars. I know it's smoking and bad for you but to be honest, If i have the time to smoke a dozen or so over the summer, that would be about it. There's just something about them. That somewhere, somebody made the one in your hand with their hands. That they require so much attention and if you look after them properly and keep them in ideal conditions, they can last 40 or more years. I love the smell of them and walking into those walk-in humidors in smoke shops. And, i like that when you light one up, you are doing so knowing that you are going to be smoking that cigar for about an hour, plus how each one is always a little bit different.......Oh, the question. I don't mind a woman enjoying a cigar. I can't say i've ever been in the company of one but it wouldn't bother me in the least. It might even be a little sexy, but i think that might just be an image created in my head by cigar ads to make me buy more?

      Delete
    2. I know you enjoy a good cigar. I love the smell. I don't partake regularly, but have been known to enjoy one a time or two (or six...:) so I asked what you thought. It goes well with a rich red wine. I find I have a pattern to the times I have enjoyed one - I'm usually out on some deck/balcony somewhere in the evening. It is a peaceful act.

  8. Wow, you have been busy! Love the new rockwall... it's awesome! Congrats on 18 years together, that says something for making it work, and proves that in this world of disposible relationships it still can be done!

I posted my next question on the previous post, forgot to scroll up, so reposting it here. Who is your greatest hero (living or dead) and why?

    1. Thanks Josie! About the anniversary and the rock wall. Every day hasn't been exceptional but i would not have traded any of those days to spend 18 years with anyone else.

Sorry i've been so long in replying to this. You really have me stumped on this one. Right now, i don't have an answer yet. I promise i will give you one before this is all over. I just need you to be patient while i ponder this one some more. Sorry.

  9. Up until 4:30 in the morning seeding?! I don't even stay out that late when I'm partying!

I read that you're pro-peanut butter and I thought I'd come over and see if you wanted to do a post about it yourself. Try and add to the numbers. How about it?

    1. It's been some time for me partying that late myself. Somehow, staying up that late just to work, seems a little wrong.

I am considering the peanut butter post, because of course, it's all about the peanut butter!

  10. Happy Anniversary! I like when people actually do something for that, because clearly life gets in the way of special moments at other times.

I'm envious of the rain, I must say. And that is a beautiful stone garden for your trees! Definitely worth it.

    1. Thanks so much! It is an inconvenience to work around the rain but i don't know where we'd be without it?

We always try to do something. The gifts have gotten a little less extravagant, as we've decided that that money would be better spent on a vacation together but we certainly always try to make a day of it.
