#105. or, Advice to a 16 yr old ken-inatractor

I'm still answering questions over on Carries blog, The Hammock in The Honeysuckle, for the chance at winning her hammock. You can read about Thursdays question here.

The question she asked was this:

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 16 YEAR OLD SELF?

I've had this video sitting in my You Tube favorites for some time now. I knew that I wanted to use it in a post at some point because I like the message. Even though it's directed at a class from the 90's, the advice would still prove useful to a young, 16 year old Ken-inatractor from the 80's with his hair parted in the middle and feathered back.

Of course I'll have to find a way to record it to cassette tape because that was the only way to listen to music while crusing in my pick-up truck on main street during lunch hour. No memory sticks, MP3's, ipods, or music downloads.

Also, if this makes it back to the 80's, you should try to write it down because your deck will probably eat the tape and you might have to put a bic pen through the hole to wind the tape back in.

I think that everyone has most likely seen this before but if you haven't, pay attention, it's good advice.

    1. If you had listened to this advice when you were 16 Dan, you might not feel that old now? :)

    2. Who listens to advice when they are 16? I only took advice from "Mary Jane" and all she told me was to be as lazy as possible! lol

    1. I've heard it a few times on a local radio station. It's sort of a neat piece.
      Thanks.

    1. I liked it the first time I heard it. That was only about a half a year ago. I was quite surprised to find out it's as old as it is.

  5. There's most likely quite a few of us that could of stood an ass kicking or two at 16 years old!

  7. I know I got advice like that when I was young. Of course, I already knew everything when I was 16, so I didn't need it. ;)

A couple of those lessons resonate with me now because I've only so recently learned how valuable they are:

    1) Do one thing every day that scares you - there are a lot of things I'm catching up on now because I was too scared to do them when I was young.
    2) Use your body; it's the best tool you'll ever have - no healthy 16-year old understands what a bad knee/back/ankle/whatever can do to your life enjoyment.

Also, have you noticed that those Bic pens pretty much don't exist anymore? I think their greatest use was for winding cassette tapes.

    1. I'm pretty sure that stupid things I did in the past are what I'm paying for now. But you're right, I probably wouldn't have listened either back then.

I hadn't thought about it but you have a point about the bic pens. But how many people actually write that way anymore I wonder? It's all typing now!

    2. I carry a pen around just in case I need to get all passive-aggressive and fix the spelling, grammar, or punctuation on something I see. It's not to change prices on price tags. Nope, it's not for that at all!

  8. Right time. Just what I needed to hear.

  9. Never heard it before - but very sound advice. Especially about the sun block ;-)... ugh, unfortunately most of it can't be understood by a young person. I wish I hadn't felt quite so invincible over the years - I would have taken better care of myself and my actions.
