#112. or, I'm up for the challenge

Remember a while back when I had to take that MRI? Turns out that I have a torn rotator cuff. As far as rotator cuff injuries are concerned, this one is pretty mild. I suppose it's the good rotator cuff injury? It isn't torn through so badly that it needs surgery to repair. In fact, they don't really want to do much about it at all. I'm booked for therapy. It's a 3 month waiting list. I think I'm in the second month now.

The way to fix this is to strengthen the other two muscles of my rotator cuff that aren't torn so they do most of the work and allow the torn one to heal. It's supposed to take a year. If it's not better by then..........they'll look at it again.

The doctor gave me a list of exercises I can do at home until they call me for therapy. That way, when they call me in, the physio therapist will be amazed at my progress toward healing and shoosh me away so I don't waste their time. My thought was to try to wrench my shoulder from it's socket just before I go so they actually know somethings wrong. (it can't hurt any worse?)

But that's probably not the right thing to do. I need to fix this. I need do fix something else too. If you've followed me for any length of time, I threw myself, whole hearted into trying to fit into my suit of awesomeness for my sons graduation at the beginning of summer. And I made it too. But I wouldn't have made it into that suit if I hadn't been a part of the Pish Posh Get Fit Challenge. If fact, I did so well that I came in second in the voting at the end.

And then  I celebrated. I celebrated by drinking beer.......... and caesars..........and mojitos..........and eating cookies..............ALL SUMMER!

  So now I'm fluffy again.

Here's the good part! There's a whole new Pish Posh challenge!

The Pish Posh 8 Week Challenge

At the end of 8 weeks, I should just about be done with my harvest and fall field work. After that, my plan is to start going back to the track in town on a regular basis and by Christmas, be able to wear a bitchin new shirt and a spiffy vest. (which I'm planning on asking for , for Christmas. (I know, it's clothes! It may be the first time I've asked for clothes for Christmas.)  I plan to use these 8 weeks to get my diet back on track and get back to exercising on a regular basis. Then plow on into winter on my quest for the bitchin shirt & spiffy vest.

So here's the goal for my 8 weeks. Get my weight to at minimum 179 pounds and get into a routine of some sort of exercise most every day. If I meet those goals, you may get a picture of me in a cape! or......inacape!

Week 1, I'm going to try to get a handle on what I'm shovelling into my mouth. Cut the crap out and look at healthier options.

this morning, me and my monkey toes weighed 186 pounds
Maybe, just maybe, if we can swing it, a tropical vacation might be in the cards if everything falls into place. If it does, I'm gonna look spectacular by the time it's ready to go. Of course I have to convince my wife first.

.............I'm going to get a lot of brownie points if I can tear out that horrible linoleum under the scale and do some bathroom reno's as well. It's going to be a busy winter.

  1. Great, you got your post in tonight! Me too :)

I wasn't around for the last challenge, but it sounds like you did well! I'm sure you will do just as well this time. I'm glad we'll be supporting each other. Support always makes the process easier.

And, I really can't wait to see you inacape :)

    1. Thanks Brett, I've always been meaning to ask you how your shoulder turned out. It appears they want me to do the stretching exercises as well.

    1. That sounds like a pretty impressive and useful talent. Are you sure you haven't evolved beyond the rest of us? :)

  4. Be very careful not to tweak your shoulder while exercising. My BIG appointment is Monday after 4 weeks of PT (couldn't do much due to pain) three of four rotator cuff muscles torn in end of June accident. I'm hoping I continue on with PT, no surgery cause I hear rehab from that's a bitch!

Your can drop 10 in 8 weeks through eating well and exercise for sure. Keep us posted! You can do it!

    1. Thanks Gina!

Sounds like you're far worse off than I am. I hope you can do this with out the surgery, it does sound rather unpleasant. At least I can still use my arm, I just have to work around the positions that make my eyes cross.

I'm sure going to try. Hope it goes well. :)

  5. I gained weight too. I had a moment this morning where I accidentally put on an old, old pair of work pants. It felt like my insides were being crushed. Such is life.

    1. I ended up with a tight pair of jeans myself on the weekend when my comfy jeans were in the wash. I couldn't help feeling like I should have on a pair of white high tops, a wife beater and be wearing a mullet! (I ROCKED the 80's!) Bailed on those pants in a hurry! It's all about comfort now. :)

  7. Good luck Ken! You actually think it is be a challenge to "convince my wife first" about a vacation? I hardly think Karri will object to that at all. LOL! BTW: when did you loose the mullet? LOL!!! ~ Sheri

    1. The problem, Sheri, is that the same money set aside for holidays can also be used for reno's. The more work I can do myself the more left over. And I'm not all that handy in the carpentry department. :)

    1. I understand, sometimes things just come out.

I took that long, long journey a few years back. It's these short ones I keep needing to stay on track.

  9. Fluffy mcflufferton!! Its funny because my bf is happy when he is 186. He almost jumps up and down - but for the opposite reasons :) He has a hard time gaining weight. MUST BE ROUGH eh?

I support you! Thanks for joining up again! I love all the friends coming together!! Let's de-fluff, buddy!

The main difference between your bf and me is that he's probably all muscle-ly and awesome and stuff. I'm rather soft......like a pillow.

  12. Oh no, too bad about your rotator cuff. That has got to be excruciating. I have no doubt that with gentle exercise you can strengthen it. I also think not being fluffy anymore is an excellent goal!!

Good luck! You know I'm pulling for ya!

    1. Thanks Carrie. I suspect that it will improve. It still works and everything. It just really dislikes certain positions. I try to work around those. :)

  13. Good news for the no surgery thing! Work that rotator cuff! hee hee.

I am in the process of figuring out some sort of 'routine' as well, that fits into my INSANE existence of nothingbutworkendofstory, right now. I have a skeleton plan -
    Monday - P90 of choice
    Tuesday - zumba
Wednesday - run or P90 of choice
    Thursday - run on campus
    Friday - free day
    Sat - free choice
    Sun-rest
    We'll see.

So you're planning a tropical trip? What are your ideas? Where do you want to go?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hello, my friend!

ACK! That's a pretty busy INSANE schedule! I'm not sure that I could keep that one up.But then, you're just amazing so I have no doubt that you can pull it off.

About the trip, it's more of an idea than a plan right now. Because we want to take little son with us this time, we're just looking at going back to the Puerto Vallarta area. It's the most affordable option and we are a little familiar with the area and know the tours and things offered there. If it was just my wife and I, we would probably be a little more adventurous.

Right now, we are trying to find ways to slip extra funds into our holiday kitty. But my fingers are crossed. Plus, I love counting off calender days to winter vacation. Hope it works out. :)

    1. Mostly I just seem to have more success when I work towards a goal and have a little competition while doing it.

And Lady in Red deserved the win. She did so much better at losing the weight than I did. Still though, it was nice to be close. :)

  15. You got me with the fluffy comment. That's good stuff. I'd have to say, I have gotten soft and fluffy like a pillow too. I have only gained back 3 pounds, but I have lost the muscle and tone I was starting to enjoy. I'll be hitting the weights again and I want to lose another 10-15 pounds. Together we can do this!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am confident that we can. :)

You did very well to only gain back the 3 pounds. I'm hoping that if I can get back into an exercise schedule, my muscle tone will return. Or at the very least become a little more visible?

  16. Glad you're in the challenge too, Ken! I was doing pretty well maintaining after the last one... right up until I destroyed my ankle. Sitting immobile at home eating all the carbs in the cupboard was not good. Now that I'm back on my board, I'll be racing you to cut those pounds... :)

    1. I can completely understand putting on a few pounds while you're laid up recovering from an injury. Yourself, and Squirrel above, have no reason to be down on yourselves in that regard. My pounds all came back from plain bad habits. I need to do something about that.
